Promoting a healthy smile for life

Start and maintain a good dental health plan

Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of Chattanooga recommends that a child’s first pediatric visit to the dentist be scheduled before their first birthday. It’s important to ensure that your child has an early, healthy start to good dental hygiene. However, it is just as important to ensure that your child’s first experience with dentists is a positive one to establish the trust and confidence your child needs to enjoy their dental visits years into the future.

What To Expect

When preparing for and taking your child to their first dental visit, we recommend parents do the following:

  • Let the child know that the dentist and staff will explain everything in detail and answer any questions they may have.

  • Encourage them to discuss any anxieties or fears they may feel prior to and even during the appointment.

  • Do not make a big deal out of the visit, and refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear such as “needle” or “drill.”

  • Allow our team, who are experienced in dealing with children’s anxiety, to explain treatment procedures in a positive and pleasant manner.

Getting To Know Your Child

At your child’s first pediatric visit, your child can expect to spend some time getting to know their dentist and care team and easing any concerns or anxieties that might arise. Afterward, we will record the child’s dental and medical history, complete a comprehensive examination and discuss any findings with you. Your dentist will also go over the importance of maintaining a good dental health program with you and your child to ensure they keep a beautiful and healthy smile for life!
